He was the best around at the the time but was not a national figure. I distinctly remember the local road races. We paid $3 entry and these bought ribbon for the first three finishers. He showed up for one race in a god-awful stained tee-shirt complaining that the pizza he had just finished was killing his stomach. He started slow, but then his left arm started moving sideways like beating a drum - of course he pulled ahead and won. Quite a mind game. We ran in the winter snow in south Minneapolis and did three mile intervals in Powderhorn Park near his home. I quit running (not very good anyway)for graduate school and academics.
